Referee Information

Register to take the referee certification course, to be held in Marquette at the Days Inn on March 4-5, 2017 (note, referees certified in the past need only take the in person re-certification course on Saturday, March 5 -all students must take some on-line courses in preparation of the certification course, described below).

Go to Michigan Referee website:
Click on "Class Registration", then click on "To log in and register, click here" Past users should use their prior username and passwords. New users - click on "New Users", highlighted in green, and follow instructions
Once logged in, click on "Courses", then "Referee Courses". Referees with prior certification should register for the "2017 Grade 8 Re Certification" course by clicking on course number " 18811".

New referees should register for the "2017 Grade 8 Bridge" course by clicking on " 18812-BRIDG".
Registration may require a "Grade/Age Code" to be entered, if you are not yet 14 years of age when registering - expectation is that you turn 14 prior to refereeing. If you have an error message during registration that requires an age override code, use

the code: 69525
Both Grade 8 Bridge and Re-Cert courses each cost $67.50 to attend and shall be paid for by the registrant at the time of registration.
Once registered, you will be instructed in your registration entry to complete concussion awareness and other preliminary training online. This must be completed prior to attending the certification course in March. Last year, I think it only took about

an hour or so to complete all online training.
If you plan to become certified or re-certified, please register as soon as possible. Courses are only held if there are enough participants attending.

This year, we plan on having 2-3 referee supervisors. We will be holding interviews for these positions sometime in late March or early April. Once you've been certified as a referee, and if you are interested in a referee supervisor position, please let

me know. I'll be sending out reminders for this after the referee certification course is complete. Below are the pay scales for the 2016 season, which will likely carryover for the 2017 season. Generally, we assign more experienced referees to the older divisions and new referees to the younger divisions. We do our best to assign referees to games as fairly as possible, but there are logistical and other considerations that may affect scheduling. In the past, if a referee is eager and available, there are usually a number of opportunities to sub in for games that other referees cannot make in addition to the scheduled games assigned at the beginning of the season.

2017 Game Guidelines

We'll plan to have a mandatory referee meeting to go over the season expectations, etc. in mid-late April. During the meeting, we'll cover referee responsibilities and provide you with information and have you fill out any necessary forms. We'll also hand

out referee shirts and whistles at that time. More information on the meeting will be provided after the certification course is complete in March.

**The SSA Board has received feedback regarding referee certification and have decided that we will re-institute a reimbursement program for the cost of certification ($67.50) to better attract referees. Referees will be reimbursed based on the following:

-Referee at least 5 games throughout the SSA Recreation season (each referee will be guaranteed at least 5 games and depending on number or referees and an individual's schedule limitations, we anticipate at least 10 games assigned to each)

-If a referee has one unexcused absence, 1/2 of the certification cost will be forfeited

-If a referee has a second unexcused absence, the entire certification cost will be forfeited

-The first 25 referees to sign up will be eligible for reimbursement (note that other referees not associated with SSA recreation league will be in the certification course, so the number of referees signed up for the course is not indicative of the 25 limit. Please feel free to contact me if you plan to sign up and have questions regarding number of referees signed up for SSA Recreation)

-Cost of training will be reimbursed with the final paycheck if all requirements are met

As a reminder, an unexcused absence is essentially a "no show" where the referee has not made a concerted effort to find a replacement for a game they are assigned for and cannot attend due to scheduling conflict. Medical and family emergencies would be considered excused.

We hope that you consider refereeing again this upcoming season as SSA truly depends on your involvement. We're looking forward to another great season of youth soccer in Marquette! Thank you.
